Hiking: let's discover the territory in a different way

A paradise for hikers, whether they are sporty or amateur, many local waymarked paths exist on the seaside and in the mountains covering all difficulty levels and distances.
Hiking tours

Various hiking tours are available to take you on a path of discovery:

Hiking tours have also been listed by the Conseil Départemental des Alpes-Maritimes in specialized guides:

Long-distance hiking paths crossing the French Riviera (Grandes Randonnées)

Several long-distance hiking routes (GR) cross the French Riviera:

  • GR51 : Also called the “Balcony of the Mediterranean”. This long-distance footpath crosses the French Riviera from east to west and follows the crest line of Castellar above Menton.
  • GR52A : It goes around the Mercantour National Park via the summits above Tende.
  • GR52 : It leads from Saint-Dalmas-Valdelbore to Menton via Mount Boreon, to the Valley of Merveilles, the forest of Turini and Sospel. Its ultimate point is the Garden of Val Rahmeh in Menton.
  • GR510 : It offers a transverse crossing of the Alpes-Maritimes through Breil-sur-Roya, Sospel, Villars-sur-Var, Puget-Theniers, Roquesteron, Escragnolles, and Saint-Cezaire-sur-Siagne.
Horse and donkey rides

Despite the mountainous terrain, different trails offer the possibility to explore the territory on horseback, or on a donkey or mule.
These walks allow you to experience an unforgettable moment in the company of these beautiful animals.

Cycling and mountain biking

It is also possible to cycle on the roads of the French Riviera. By taking these less visited paths, you will discover the grandiose landscapes of this territory.

As for mountain biking, you will have at your disposal numerous mountain and hiking paths to follow from Sospel to Tende.

The level of difficulty varies according to the routes allowing you to choose the one that suits you the best.

All tracks in Mercantour Park are under special regulation in order to preserve the protected area: several organizations rent mountain bikes and provide appropriate maps of paths to take.

The Conseil Départemental des Alpes-Maritimes has also published a special guide with about thirty routes which you can take, some of which are in Tende and the Roya Valley: Rando VTT.
